Anno Domini: 2017, The Year of the LordJanuary 5, 2017
Time passes and we mark the days, the months and the years. As I look back over all 2016 was and forward to what 2017 will be, the Lord has awakened my mind to mark each day as a day the Lord has made and each year as Anno Domini, the year of the Lord.
In our typical day-to-day use, we drop the “AD” label when numbering our years. But it is there. History hangs as on a hinge at the birth of One man, Jesus the Christ. We mark history by Him. We are also marked by Him as His people on this day and in this year that He has made.
So, whatever else today may be, it is a day the Lord has made and we are called to rejoice and be glad in it. Yes, life is hard and yes, some days have what feel like unbearable levels of grief, but even those days are days the Lord has made and He is faithful to carry us through. As days accumulate into months and years, the Lord is Lord of all and to His Gospel we are witnesses.
In all of human history this day, and this year, is unique. There is a greatness to it. There is also a smallness to it. We see time in lifetimes and generations. God sees the beginning and the end of time itself. The years and their events happen within the sovereignty of God and His redemptive arc of history.
Whatever 2017 will be, let us be the people who intentionally declare to the world this is the year of the Lord. As people lay claim to 2017 as the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, the Chinese year of the rooster, the year of the 45th President of the United States; and as others seek to make it a year of terror or mayhem, let us be the people who consistently bear witness to Anno Domini, the year of the Lord.
No day of this year will be as dark as the day upon which Jesus died upon the Cross and no day with be as glorious as the day upon which Jesus rose from the dead. In every day we declare His incarnation, His atoning death, His resurrection, His ascension and His reign as Lord of all. We also look forward in this day and this year to His coming again. This may be the day and this the year of the Lord in a way that no other day will ever rival. And we are called to live with a readiness that today may be the Lord’s day in that way.
As we live into the days of 2017, I want to give each new day to the Lord as the day that He has made and live the year to His glory as Anno Domini. Will you join me?
