Lent day 16: How the shield of faith worksMarch 16, 2020
The shield of faith is an essential piece of the whole armor of God described by the apostle Paul in Ephesians 6:10-20. He says “the shield of faith” is that “with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one”. Flaming arrows or flaming darts sound terrifying so let’s consider two images to calm those fears.
What would happen if a flaming arrow met a bottomless well of water? It would disappear into the depths and create nothing more than a ripple. Now consider the reality that people of faith have the living water of Christ welling up within us to eternal life. Faith is deep and continually refreshed and replenished by the Spirit. Your shield of faith is a deep well.
And your shield of faith is also an identifying feature of the full armor or God – like a family crest, it shows we belong to God in Christ. So that shield of faith you’re carrying today, it lets others know who you are AND it extinguishes the darts and arrows of the enemy.
