Lent Day 36 – John 15 – the love/hate relationship
Where in the Word are you today? I’m in John 15.
Where do you abide? That question sounds strange to us. We might ask where a person lives but it would be unusual to ask where they abide. Jesus says in John 15 that his disciples abide him, as branches abide in a vine. He is their source, their sustenance and the one to whom they cling. Then he issues the command that his disciples should love one another as Christ loves us. But following the love command, Jesus warns his disciples they will be hated. And he says so six times.
There’s literally a love/hate relationship between Christians and the world. We love and the world hates. Why? Because we love with a love the world does not understand and refuses to receive. Worried how you’d withstand the haters? Well Jesus has got your back. He sends the Holy Spirit to help us stand.
