Lent day 37 – John 16 – Already? Yes, and not yet
Where in the Word are you today? I’m in John 16.
Jesus tells the disciples about the Holy Spirit and why they’re going to need the Spirit’s presence, protection, guidance and counsel once he’s gone. The disciples are understandably grieved as Jesus forecasts his own death. He says, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” The trouble of which he speaks covers a wide landscape – and the peace of Christ surpasses what the world understands.
But don’t miss the already and not yet aspect of this chapter. Remember, Jesus has not yet gone to the cross and yet he says he has overcome the world. What is at hand is already accomplished. The Kingdom is already here but not fully. And we still need the promised Holy Spirit for the trouble we face in our day.
