President Bush delivered a speech calling Americans to remember our identity and ideals. The most important line in the speech was not political or cultural— but theological. Bush calls each of us to see others as bearers of the Imago Dei quality, as created in God’s image. Christians, we are called to speak this truth about human dignity to a country that has lost its understanding of who we are in God’s eyes.
Here are two stories revealing just how much confusion there is about human dignity. We should read both of these stories with a pro-life lense. What does it look like to raise a generation of kids in the “right to die” culture? And how does this affect our conversations about suicide, mental health and immigrants?

A growing share of Americans say it’s not necessary to believe in God to be moral— PEW Research FactTank
This research finds, “Most U.S. adults now say it is not necessary to believe in God to be moral and have good values (56%), up from about half (49%) who expressed this view in 2011.” This research should not be surprising, since a growing portion of the population is not affiliated with a religion. But, if we lose our shared understanding of morality according to a religious standard, then what does it mean to be moral? And who gets to say?
