Must Read Monday: Billy Graham, Living Biblically, Jackie Hill-Perry and The AND CampaignFebruary 26, 2018
Part of today’s Must Read Monday is a must listen. If you’ve never heard Billy Graham preach, you must listen. In 1979, I was 10 years old when Billy Graham came to my hometown of Tampa, Florida for a five-day Crusade. Like everyone else who lived in Tampa at the time, my family went to hear the man who really only ever preached one sermon: Sin is real and personal, God’s love is real, personal and greater than your sin, Jesus really died for you, personally, and now, right now, you have a decision to make about how you’re going to respond. I was sitting next to my dad who was 38 at the time.
Unbeknownst to us, but known to God, my full-of-life dad would be dead in less than five years. I walked with my dad to the turf of the stadium where we’d watched the Pele play the Rowdies and a new NFL team called the Bucs lose their first 26 games. I held his hand. I don’t point to that night as the night I made my own personal decision, but it was the night in which I rest with great assurance of my dad’s salvation.
The life and death of Billy Graham gives each of us an opportunity to point to the Gospel this week. If you don’t remember hearing Billy Graham preach, go to Sirius XM 145 through March 4 or to TheBillyGrahamChannel.com for 65 years of archived sermons. And block out time on Friday to watch or listen to his funeral. Why? Because our sin is real, but the love of God is greater than our sin, and today is the day of decision for tomorrow may not come.
New TV Show ‘Living Biblically’
Johnny Galecki, who plays physicist Leonard Hofstadter on the CBS hit comedy ‘Big Bang Theory’, has started a production company and is tackling what he sees as the lack of representation of “the religious demographic” by launching a new show called ‘Living Biblically.’ Pray for this production that the faith would be represented in a way that honors the Word of God and accurately portrays the life of faith to which we are called in Christ. If you don’t know her name, her story and her ministry, you should. To learn about what happened to her when she went to Harvard to share her testimony of God’s liberation from same-sex attraction, read this: Christian Artist says Newsweek Misrepresented Her Harvard Speech.
Remember when the culture swooned over Oprah Winfrey’s call for each and every person to “speak their truth?” Why then, when this African-American woman speaks her truth does the culture respond with vitriol? Because this truth, The Truth, does not align with the prevailing narrative of LGBTQ affirmation and celebration. Jackie Hill-Perry is a powerful witness to the transforming power of God, and people who want to be affirmed in their sin – don’t like it. Pray for her and for her husband, Preston, as God gives them opportunity to speak the Truth in a culture which has grown allergic to it.
The AND Campaign
God has ignited a movement called The & Campaign (read The AND Campaign) that I believe has the power to transform the culture, get people talking across all the dividing walls of hostility erected among us, and bring about genuine racial reconciliation. It’s called The AND Campaign and I invite you to check it out: theandcampaign.com.
