National: The Truth, the whole Truth and nothing but the Truth? So help us God
The 2016 election got everyone talking again about the truth. Even those who had argued for decades that truth was relative and there are no absolutes suddenly realized the error of their ways. News agencies hired fact checkers and created new taglines declaring the importance of truthfulness when they found that people had come to believe the lies they’d been taught by post-truth post-modern academicians and thought leaders.
We have arrived at our current national moment after a decades long march away from the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. And yes, God stands ready to help us. But we will have to repent of our propensity toward half-truths, white-lies and fudging the facts.
As they say, the first step toward recovery is recognizing you have a problem. It appears that a growing majority of Americans recognize the truth problem we now face as a nation. Let us be the people who are fiercely committed to The Truth and speak the truth in love on this, and every matter, of our day.
Local: Does your church have, operate, house or host a school? You’ll want to read this:
Wow. This is a story likely to give LOTS of church leaders pause. As historic facilities of old mainline denominations with diminishing membership consider options for financing upkeep and programs they can no longer sustain through tithes and offerings, they often turn to renting space. But as this story reveals, that has serious potential tax implications. We will watch this story as it progresses. I assume the 501c3 status of this congregation is covered by its parent organization, the PCUSA – which also rents large portions of its Louisville, KY headquarters to for-profit tenants. A quick Google search of “Presbyterian rentals” reveals many churches in the business of renting space. If your church is in the practice of renting space for any purpose other than the proclamation of the Gospel for the salvation of humankind, you might want to ask why, to whom and at what potential cost to your non-profit religious institutional status.

Global: The formation of Ukrainian Church independent from Russia is as seismic as 1517 Protestant Reformation.
Universal: Democrats want abortion recognized as a universal human right; propose bill on 70th anniversary of UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Last week the conversation surrounding the 70th anniversary of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights centered on what it means to be human. But abortion advocates seized upon the opportunity to promote abortion as a universal human right on social media. Now just pause for a moment and think about that. From what view of the world and what view of life does that make moral sense?

Personal: What we generously call reproductive medical technology opens a Pandora’s box of ethical and moral questions many Christians – and most churches – have not thought through.
We have arrived at the point where Christians not only imagine that having their own biological child is their right, but that they are free to do so using whatever medical technologies are available without consideration for whether or not doing so is righteous and good. And if a person or couple has made peace with IVF then why not design their own baby to be free of genetic defect? Isn’t that just reasonable? And financially responsible?
If you have not been following the advances in reproductive medical technology, now is the time to catch up as genetic engineers believe they have designed out the problems of imperfect people.
