Reconnect One: Debt of GraceMarch 20, 2019
Maybe you’ve heard that America’s national debt topped 22 trillion dollars in early 2019. That’s a crushing load of debt too big for us to get our minds around and yet, it keeps growing.
So how do we get God back into that conversation? Well, there’s a hymn called Come Thou Fount which includes a line that declares, “Oh, to grace how great a debtor daily I’m constrained to be.” This brings the conversation about debt into a conversation about grace.
Romans 13:8-10 tells us that we make good on the debt of grace by paying it out in love to others. So even as the national debt grows, maybe the love we show others could grow as well – every second we could let the love of God be multiplied to the world through those of us who have experienced His all-sufficient, lavish grace. That might change the conversation.
