Reconnect One: Godhood, the game
There’s a reason God addresses idolatry in the first commandment. The temptation to be like God or at least live in the fantasy of being revered as a god is very real today. For those who want to develop a religion based around themselves as a deity, there’s now a game for that. It’s called Godhood.
Those familiar with god games will recognize the themes of attracting and guiding followers with virtues, vices, enacted rituals, and the construction of monuments to, well, your own glory. They’ll also recognize the recruitment of others to your religion. Godhood, the game, is complete with rival deities and religions which result in ritual combats called sacraments. Yes the sacred has literally been made profane.
We certainly all play games with God – from the hide and seek of the Garden of Eden to the disciple’s quest of go fish. But to actually make a game of God – that’s quite a new level of idolatry.
