Reconnect One: Reasonable and ResponsibleJune 26, 2019
I guess I was about 14 when my dad told me he thought it was time for me to become reasonable and responsible. He described those two qualities this way: when you were a child you thought like a child, you reasoned like a child, but now you’re becoming a young woman and I expect you to reason more and more like an adult. There are some childish ways you need to put away.
I expect you, my dad said, to be reasonable because God has actually made you able to reason. Not everyone is as able to reason as you, he reasoned, so that makes you responsible. Responsibility, he said, belongs to those who have the ability to respond reasonably. The two go together because those who are able to reason are then those who are able to respond. It’s time to turn the corner and become a woman of reason and responsibility. A calling I continue to seek to live into today.
