Reconnect One: SuperheroApril 30, 2019
The passage seems clear, “after supper, Jesus got up from the table, wrapped a towel around himself, and began washing the disciples’ feet.” But when I arrived at the place as the narrator of the Holy Week drama we were acting out at church, the boy playing Jesus tied the towel around his neck, not his waist.
The murmuring laughter in the congregation was audible but the scene was so solemn that no one laughed out loud. I simply continued with the narrative as the boy used the towel-turned-cape to wipe the feet of the kids playing the roles of the disciples. It was a reenactment of the last supper I dare say no one in attendance will ever forget.
In your mind, is Jesus more of a servant or a superhero? Does the towel belong around his waist or his shoulders or both? To be certain, in the 1st century he tied the towel around his waist but in the 21st century, did the kid in the play reveal the real superhero his heart longed to find?
