Reconnect One: Western CivOctober 3, 2019
I was talking with a woman who spent many years as a Christian in a predominantly Muslim culture. She said she learned things about Jesus she never knew living in America. There was no presumption of foundational Christian values beneath or behind or leading into relationships or business dealings or political decisions. I asked her to tell me more.
She shared how different an honor/shame culture is from the liberty and justice for all, guilt and innocence culture of the United States. True liberty, justice that is redemptive, come to find out, that’s an ideal unique to Western civilization. Why is that? Because that ideal is built upon the foundation of the revelation and embrace of who God is, what God has done in Jesus Christ, and what God wills for human flourishing.
Isn’t it interesting how much we can learn about our self and our faith and our own culture by spending time cross culturally with people of other faiths?
