What Are They Reading?
In a conversation with an 82 year old friend about the election, she was trying to wrap her mind around how tens of millions of people could have voted the way they did. Her summary statement was, “What are they thinking?”
Might I suggest that clues to the answer can be found in what they are reading.
This headline from the Washington Post caught my eye this morning: Want to understand Biden voters? Here’s your reading list.
If you want to understand someone, ask them what they’re reading, what they’re streaming and what’s on their playlist – and then read what they’re reading, watch what they’re watching and listen to what they’re listening to.
What Am I Reading?
If someone wants to understand me, they’re going to need to read. That list starts with the Bible – Romans, Ephesians, Philippians, Luke, John for starts. Reading over my shoulder right now would include Deep Discipleship by J.T. English, The 25 days of Christmas Advent devo by Joshua and Christie Straub, The Tennessee Driver’s Ed book (Just in case you’re interested!) which I’m reading with Matthew, Francis Schaeffer’s True Spirituality which I’m re-reading with Jim, and the gospel of Luke which I’m set to begin reading with the Faith Radio family on December 1.
What are you reading and how is what you’re reading influencing how you think and engage the world? Let me know in the comments below.
What Are You Reading?
If we want to cultivate and apply the mind of Christ on the matters of the day then we have to be in the Word, the very Word of God. So, where in the Word are you today?
Show some curiosity today in your conversations and ask other people what they’re reading. It will give a window into why they think the way they do.
